Author in the spotlight: Stacey Rourke

Welcome Stacey, I'm delighted to have you on my blog today.

Please tell us about your writing. Can you explain the title without giving too much away?

A conduit is a receptacle used to siphon something from one thing to another. In the Gryphon Series nineteen year old Celeste Garrett is the Conduit of the Gryphon, a creature half-eagle and half-lion. The mythical being siphons his abilities into her as well as granting her older brother, Gabe, the form of a lion, and her younger sister, Kendall, the wings of a lion. But these abilities come with a price; there is an army of demons that would like nothing more than to claim them…or kill them.

Wow, that sounds all kinds of serious, doesn’t it? Yeah, it’s totally not. I’m known for my snarky dialogue…it’s kinda my thing.

What was your journey as a writer?

I have been writing since I could put a crayon to paper, then subjecting my elementary school friends to listening to me stand up in front of them and read these frightfully dull stories that usually ended with some big cheesy reveal, like a giant remote control that was to blame for the “haunted” house. (In elementary school you would’ve thought I was preparing for a carrier writing for Scooby-doo.)

That said I think my journey has been more one of realization that I am a writer. It’s who I am and an intricate part of me. Most authors will tell you it’s something written on our DNA, if we tried to give it up we’d be miserable.

I am inspired by authors like Arturo Perez Reverte, Jack Vance, Dan Simmons, Beatrice Small, J.R.R Tolkien, C. S. Lewis. What writers inspire you?

Honestly, all writers inspire me. Indie authors, main stream authors, aspiring authors, I read them all. If they can create a world that engages me, I’m inspired! Everyone has their own voice and every book is the opportunity to see things in a way you may not have before.

What are your future writing goals?

To continue writing books that make people question my sanity a lil bit.

Whom do you see as your ideal reader?

People that like to laugh, but need that compelling storyline to drive the book along. My material stays at a PG-13 rating, so a wide age range can enjoy them without blushing and worrying someone is going to read over their shoulder and judge them horribly.

When you have time, what would we find you reading?

It could be anything! The latest books I’ve read are Deadlocked by Charlaine Harris, Warm Bodies by Isaac Marion, and a sneak peek of an arc copy of The Unraveling of Avery Snow by Christy Sloat and Pulse by HJ Daly.

What do you learn from your writing?

The message I hope all readers get from The Gryphon Series is that we can each be the hero of our own stories. There is an inner strength in us that we don’t even realize until those hard times happen. Those are the moments we must decide to dig deep and rise to meet the challenge so it doesn’t defeat us.

Who has been your biggest supporter?

My family, my friends, and my readers (the Condu-nuts.) They really have been crazy supportive. I would be nowhere without all of them hollering about my books from rooftops and being my cheerleaders whenever I need a boost.

How are you promoting your work?

I try a little bit of everything. I’m thinking a sandwich board and cowbell next, think that’ll work?

What advice can you give to aspiring writers?

Read, read, read! In the words of Stephen King, “Only by reading can an author gain the tools they need for their craft.”

Where can our readers find a copy of your work?

The Gryphon Series- The Conduit, Embrace, The Sidekick Chronicles, and Sacrifice which is releasing this April are available wherever fine books are sold. (Except for Sidekick Chronicles which is only in ebook on Amazon and Smashwords.com)

And finally, as an author, do you have any quirks or habits that help you write better?

I talk out all the dialogue and act out the fight scenes. Seriously. Punch a door once trying to implement an effective side punch. The door won.

Thank you for being my guest today. I wish you the best of luck with your writing.

   The Conduit

All 18-year-old Celeste Garrett wants is to head off to college and make those fun, yet ill-advised, choices college kids are known for. And maybe to spend some time with the hot cameraman she just met. Instead, because of a pact her ancestors made in the 17th century with a mythical creature, she has to save the world.

While normal kids are slamming energy drinks and cramming for exams, Celeste will get her adrenaline rush fighting a fire breathing dragon. She wants to meet friends in the quad to exchange lecture notes, but first she must exchange blows with a shapeshifting demon on the rooftop. Life isn’t always fair for a superhero, but at least she doesn’t have to do it alone. With her brother and sister as sidekicks, they alternate between saving lives and getting on each others’ nerves. Together the trio encounters unspeakable odds, mystical forces and comes face-to-face with an image that will haunt them forever—their grandmother in a leopard print bikini.

"Okay, little side note here. If a psychopathic killer asks if you want to see a trick, say no. That’s the smart thing to do. I, on the other hand, responded, 'Bring it'."

Whether she likes it or not, eighteen year old Celeste Garrett has come to terms with being the Chosen One. She knew having a “normal life” would be tricky, between intense training sessions and epic demonic battles, but she didn’t know at what cost it would come. That is, until a dear friend is harmed by the malicious forces hunting her.

Now, she’d like nothing more than to retreat into a hermit lifestyle to prevent anyone else from getting hurt. But startling revelations, amazing new abilities, and mortifying moments in front of insanely hot guys won’t allow time for that. Soon, Celeste finds herself surrounded by darkness and wondering who she can trust—if anyone.

The Sidekick Chronicles
Celeste isn't the only member of the Garrett family whose life changed when destiny called. Every sidekick has their tale and in this Gryphon Series short the spotlight is turned on Kendall, Grams and even Gabe. Get an inside look at the hilarious stress that goes along with being a...sidekick.

Sidekicks...ya can't live with 'em and you'd probably die horribly without 'em.
