Their feet padded on the park’s narrow paths as they  strolled along without saying a word. She cast him a few  glances, hoping he’d break the silence. But he only smiled and  squeezed her hand. They reached the park’s cement wall. There  was not a soul about. The entrance stood a few steps to their  left, illuminated by two dim lights. With a hard pull of his hand, he swung her around to face him.

He caressed her hair. She trembled, fearing he would kiss  her, terrified he wouldn't.

She stared into his eyes. Deep pools of blue, they held hers  captive, weaving a spell of desire. This ancient park, this  immortal man, the atmosphere, all combined to surround her heart with magic.

“To hell with the pretenses,” he growled, cupped her face  in his hands, and crushed his lips to hers.

All he could think was thank God, his lips were on Kate’s  at last. The way they glistened each time she smiled, frowned,  or talked had had Matthias on the edge for over two months. Another minute of watching those rosy buds taunt him and he  would have exploded. She tasted even better than he’d  imagined—minty, yet honey sweet. He didn't want this  moment or this night to end. If he let her go, would he ever see  her again? Afraid the spell would end with the kiss, he held  onto her longer than he had intended to. He ran his tongue along her lips, parting them enough to  slide its tip inside her warm mouth. She surrendered under his  coaxing, and he deepened the kiss. Their tongues danced in  slow motion. She moaned once, sending a whole new shiver  down his spine, straight to his groin. A loud gasp escaped from  her throat and echoed among trees when he pulled back.

“Forgive me.” He lowered his hands when her flushed  skin warmed his palms. Afraid of her reaction to his foolish  advance, he held his breath.

She pressed her hand on her chest, drew a long breath, and licked her lips. “Nothing to forgive.” The blush in her  cheeks intensified. 

A load lifted from his mind. Her reaction confirmed his  suspicions that she had wanted the kiss as much as he did. The  yearning to pull her in his embrace was unbearable, but she  squared her shoulders and exhaled loudly. Caressing her elbow, he turned toward the exit. “Do you  still need that drink?”

“I do.”
